USE OF COMMON WORSHIP DAILY PRAYER  (CWDP) PSALMODY & LECTIONARY WITH THE DAILY OFFICE SSF (DOSSF)

Introduction

 

At the Joint Meeting of the First Order Chapters. Pentecost 2005, it was decided that as from Advent Sunday, 27th November 2005, for a period of 3 years, the European Province would use The Daily Office SSF for its common prayer, together with the psalmody and lectionary of Common Worship Daily Prayer.

The Sunday psalmody and lectionary continues the CWDP Preliminary Edition provision drawn from the Revised Common Lectionary. The weekday psalmody and lectionary are new arrangements in the light of criticisms of the Preliminary Edition and were authorised by General Synod in February 2005.

The weekday lectionary provides two readings for each office (though only one may be used) from the Old & New Testament. One of the readings for each day is from the Gospels either in the morning or the evening, but not normally at both.

The weekday psalmody in Ordinary Time is arranged sequentially or ‘in course’. In the seasons there are two options: the first is thematic, the second is ‘in course’. The use of the first option is recommended, being an enlarged selection based on DOSSF.

Generally speaking, there has been a lengthening both in the psalm provision and in the lectionary portions. There are some typographical provisions which it is suggested are ignored for our purposes :

·         [….]  square brackets – shorter or longer options;

·         (….)  psalm omitted if used as an opening canticle in CWDP;

·         *       asterisk – a psalm may be shortened

Psalm number in bold may be used as the only psalm at that Office.

The Chapters recommended the use of the lectionary ‘Advent 2005 to the Eve of Advent 2006’ published by Church House Publishing which is available both in small and large print editions.

 

NOTES

1)  Where alternative psalmody is provided at Morning and Evening Prayer the first alternative should be used.

2)  If the psalm used as the Opening Canticle in DOSSF is duplicated in the psalmody for the day at Morning or Evening Prayer then it may be replaced by the Venite, A Song of Triumph (p 134 or p 191) at Morning Prayer or Ps 141 (either from Preparation A or p 667) at Evening Prayer.

3)  If sections of Ps 119  or one or more of the Gradual Psalms (Pss 121 – 131) are to be used at Morning or Evening Prayer and thereby clash with the psalmody for Midday Prayer, then the alternative psalm(s) may be used at Midday Prayer.

4)  If desired the Laudate or Praise Psalms may be added to the provision for Morning Prayer (CWDP p105)

5)  The psalmody and readings for Holy Days should be taken from the CWDP lectionary. For other occasions where CWDP does not provide, those in the DOSSF should continue to be used.

HOW TO USE THIS BOOKLET

 

For speedy reference, Class I celebrations have been printed in BOLD CAPITALS, Class II in bold lower case and Class III in ordinary roman.

 

For Class I & II Holy Days, the appropriate day of the week to suit that saint is used, as defined in this booklet.

For Class III Holy Days, the category such as ‘of Bishops’, is in italics, which assumes that the normal office of the day will be used and, if desired, the refrains from the Common of Holy Days (p 482 – 492) added.  Only very occasionally are there proper psalms or readings for Class III celebrations (usually New Testament celebrations).

 

The Calendar of the Church of England as authorised in CWDP has now been incorporated into DOSSF Ordo. It is assumed that users of this Ordo will be using the CWDP Pslamody and Readings and if not, can translate according to usage.

 

The Week Number refers only to the DOSSF Midday Prayer readings.

 

The word ‘propers’ indicates that there are available proper psalms, refrains, canticles and readings for celebrating a particular feast, as against those in The Common of Holy Days or in the text of the Office for the day.

 

Page numbers of DOSSF are given where all or some propers are needed.

 

A book of Collects from CWDP, including Franciscan festivals and lesser feasts from DOSSF, and those festivals kept by SSF which have no or less provision in CWDP, has been produced for the use of SSF brothers and sisters.

There are no set collects for Commemorations: if a Commemoration is kept as a Lesser Festival, the Common of Holy Days should be used.

In future, The SSF Ordo shall be printed according to the Church year rather than the calendar year.
