While not strictly for church use, this hymnal for schools was so widely used in English schools
and became so identified with Anglican music, that it would be impossible to leave it out of this
survey. This is the enlarged edition of 1931, still in print, edited by Percy
Dearmer, Martin Shaw and Ralph Vaughan Williams. The original edition appeared in 1925

My God, I thank thee, who hast made
My God, my Father, make me strong
My Lord, my Life, my Love
My soul, there is a country
Nearer, my God, to thee
Never weather-beaten sail more willing bent
No coward soul is mine
Not always on the mount may we
Not with a choir of angels without number
Now in life's breezy morning
Now join, ye comrades true
O Christ, who holds the open gate
O for a faith that will not shrink
O for a thousand tongues to sing
O God of Bethel, by whose hand
O God of truth, whose living word
O God, our help in ages past
O happy band of pilgrims
O heavenly Beauty, lovelier far
O Holy Spirit, God
O life that makest all things new
O Lord and Master of us all
O Lord, how happy should we be
O Lord, in me there lieth nought
O Lord of hosts, all heaven possessing
O Love of God, how strong and true
O Love, who formedst me to wear
O sing to the Lord now, his greatness
O sometimes gleams upon our sight
O Son of Man, our hero strong and tender
O source divine, and life of all
O sweeter than the marriage-feast
O thou in all thy might so far
O thou not made with hands
O thou that movest all, O Power
O world invisible, we view thee
O worship the King all glorious above
Oft in danger, oft in woe
Our Father, while our hearts unlearn
Our God, to whom we turn
Poor Soul, the center of my sinful earth
Praise, my soul, the King of heaven
Praise the Lord, ye heavens, adore him
Praise to the Holiest in the height
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation
Praise we the Lord, who made all beauty
Pray that Jerusalem may have
Pray when the morn is breaking
Prayer is the soul's sincere desire
Rejoice, O land, in God thy might
Rejoice, the Lord is King
Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky
Ring out, ye crystal spheres
Rise up, O men of God
Rock of ages, cleft for me
Say not "The struggle nought availeth"
Shall God not share
Sing a song of joy, praise our God with mirth
Sing praise to God who spoke through man
Soldiers of Christ, arise
Soldiers of the Cross, arise
Sometimes a light surprises
Songs of praise the angels sang
Spread, O spread, thou mighty word
Stand up, stand up for Jesus
Stern daughter of the voice of God
Strong Son of God, immortal Love
Sunset and evening star
Sweet day, so cool, so calm, so bright
Sweet infancy
Teach me, my God and King
The God of love my Shepherd is
The King of love my Shepherd is
The Lord is in his holy place
The Lord my pasture shall prepare
The Lord of heaven confess
The Lord will come and not be slow
The spacious firmament on high
The Spirit of the Lord revealed
Thee will I love, my God and King
Then welcome each rebuff
There a myriad means, O Lord
There is a book, who runs may read
There is no sorrow, Lord, too light
There's a wideness in God's mercy
There's heaven above, and night by night
They all were looking for a king
Those who love and those who labor
Thou art my life; if thou but turn away
Thou hidden love of God, whose height
Thou Judge by whom each empire fell
Thou long disowned, reviled, oppressed
Thou true Vine, that heals the nations
Thou wast, O God, and thou wast blest
Though lowly our lot may be
Through all the changing scenes of life
Through the night of doubt and sorrow
Thy heaven, on which 'tis bliss to look
Thy Kingdom come! on bended knee
To God, the everlasting, who abides
To Mercy, Pity, Peace and Love
To the Name of our salvation
To thee whose eye all nature owns
To us in Bethlem city
Up to those bright and gladsome hills
Wake, awake, for night is flying
We love the place, O God
We saw thee not when, far away
We sing of God, the mighty source
We thank thee, Lord, for this fair earth
We thank you, Lord of Heaven
What conscience dictates to be done
When all thy mercies, O my God
When by fear my heart is daunted
When morning gilds the skies
When on my day of life
When through the whirl of wheels
Where is thy God, my soul
Who within that stable cries
Ye holy angels bright
Ye servants of the Lord
Zeal of the Lord, for ever burning
