After the initial success of the 1861 original edition,
the editors of Hymns Ancient & Modern published the second edition in 1875. This became the
most successful hymnal in the
Church of England for more than 75 years and is still in print today. The edition indexed on this
page was an attempt to introduce an historically more accurate new
edition (and with few pieces of Victoriana), but it failed to sell and was the subject of much
derision in the press of its day. This failure is due largely to the very success the previous 2ndedition had found.

Christ, who once amongst us
Loving Shepherd of thy sheep
Around the throne of God a band
Above the clear blue sky
There's a Friend for little children
Up in heaven, up in heaven
We are but little children weak
Lamb of God, I look to thee
Come, sing with holy gladness
Every morning the red sun
As now thy children lowly kneel
Do no sinful action
Hushed was the evening hymn
All things bright and beautiful
Some time o'er our pathway
Faithful Shepherd, feed me
Heavenly Father, send thy blessing
Fair waved the golden corn
Lord Jesus, God and Man
Our God of love who reigns above
Now the day is over
For Mission Services
Lord, I hear of showers of blessing
Return, O wanderer to thy home
Today thy mercy calls us
O God, to know that thou art just
Approach, my soul, the mercy-seat
Rescue the perishing, care for the dying
O come to the merciful Savior who calls you
Weary of wandering from my God
There is a fountain filled with blood
When at thy footstool, Lord, I bend
Just as I am, without one plea
My God, my God, and can it be
O the bitter shame and sorrow
Jesus, Name all names above
Come, O thou Traveler unknown
I could not do without thee
O Jesus, thou art standing
O my Savior, lifted
Souls of men! why will ye scatter
O for a closer walk with God
God made me for himself
Thou hidden love of God, whose height
Father, Son and Holy Ghost, One in Three and Three in
One
Thou didst leave thy throne and thy kingly crown
I heard the voice of Jesus say
We are soldiers of Christ, who is mighty to save
Fight the good fight with all thy might
Peace, perfect peace, in this dark world of sin
For ever with the Lord
Those eternal bowers
Hark, hark, my soul! angelic songs are swelling
Redeemed, restored, forgiven
There was joy in heaven
Processional
Onward, Christian soldiers
Forward, be our watchword
The God of Abraham praise
Glory to the First-begotten
With gladsome feet we press
Gliding through the shadows
Litanies
God the Father, God the Son (Four Last Things)
Father, whose love we have wronged
God the Father, God the Son (Penitence)
God the Father, God the Son (Passion)
