This was an alternative edition of the Episcopal Church's Hymnal tacitly authorized at the 1919
General Convention. The Episcopal Church had tried to introduce a single tune book for use with
the 1916 Hymnal, but The Rev. Dr.
Charles Hutchins, editor of the leading edition of the 1892 Hymnal, chose to introduce a
competing product. This hymnal has a number of additional texts and many different tunes than
those found in the official Hymnal, but all of the texts of 1916 Hymnal were included.
Not all of the files linked here are presently available. The headings below are those found in
the original text.

Morning
New every morning is the love
Awake, my soul, and with the sun
Come, my soul, thou must be waking
Every morning mercies new
O Jesus, crucified for man
Evening
O Brightness of the immortal Father's face
The day is gently sinking to a close
The radiant morn hath passed away
Holy Father, cheer our way
The sun is sinking fast
Sun of my soul, thou Savior dear
Abide with me; fast falls the eventide
Softly now the light of day
At even, ere the sun was set
The shadows of the evening hours
The day is past and over
Savior, breathe an evening blessing
All praise to thee, my God, this night
God, that madest earth and heaven
Now from the altar of my heart
Before the ending of the day
Sweet Savior, bless us ere we go
Our day of praise is done
As now the sun's declining rays
O Trinity of blessed Light
Bless me, O my Savior, bless me
The day thou gavest, Lord, is ended
The Lord's Day

Youth and School Life
Advent tells us Christ is near
Hosanna they were singing
Once in royal David's city
I think when I read that sweet story
O Lord, the Holy Innocents
Glory to the blessed Jesus!
Christ, who once amongst us
Who is he in yonder stall
In our work and in our play
When Jesus left his Father's throne
Summer suns are glowing
All things bright and beautiful
All that's good and great and true
Joy because the circling year
Again the morn of gladness
Above the clear blue sky
Loving Shepherd of thy sheep
Jesus, holy, undefiled
Savior, teach me day by day
King of Glory! Savior dear
There is no name so sweet on earth
Heavenly Father, may thy blessing
There's a Friend for little children
Dear Jesus, ever at my side
By cool Siloam's shady rill
A little kingdom I possess
Jesus, meek and gentle
Jesus, gentlest Savior
Faithful Shepherd, feed me
Now the day is over
We build our school on thee, O Lord
O thou whose feet have climbed life's hill
God is love; his mercy brightens
Day by day we magnify thee
If thou but suffer God to guide thee
i Father in heaven, who lovest all
ii Land of our birth, we pledge to thee
We are soldiers of Christ, who is mighty to save
Jesus, from thy throne on high
Younger Children
Savior, like a shepherd lead us
Hushed was the evening hymn
Away in a manger, no crib for a bed
I love to hear the story
Little drops of water
Jesus, high in glory
Gentle Jesus, meek and mild
Now the light has gone away
Jesus, tender Shepherd, hear me
Carols
Christ was born on Christmas Day
Waken, Christian children!
Long years ago
Stars all bright are beaming
All my heart this night rejoices
Love came down at Christmas
Ring out the bells for Christmas
See amid the winter's snow
Like silver lamps in a distant shrine
When Christ was born of Mary free
The first Nowell the angel did say
A great and mighty wonder
Carol, sweetly carol
Cradled all lowly
In the field with their flocks abiding
Saw you never, in the twilight
Hark, a burst of heavenly music
Silent night! Holy night!
Good Christian men, rejoice
We three kings of Orient are
O sons and daughters, let us sing
God hath sent his angels to the earth again
Easter flowers are blooming bright
The world itself keeps Easter Day
The pearly gates aside are rolled
Golden harps are sounding
Sing your carols today
